United Nations: An Attempt to Oneness, 70 Years Into Time

The United Nations is a widely known international regulating body since after the World War II. It has aimed for better alliances among member countries in order to eradicate war and promote a more humane society across the globe. However, 70 years into its existence, it has met huge challenges as well as achievements. But after all, has it actually championed its original goal of uniting countries to forbid the recurrence of war and to improve the quality of life everywhere?

United Nations: Mediator

One of the most iconic movements of the United Nations towards maintaining peace is acting as a mediator among different countries. By binding them into a truce, the UN is able to inculcate in the minds of world leaders that no plan to war would go undetected and that violators would be answerable to Super Powers. Also, they could potentially lose the benefits vested upon them. The basic proof of pacificity is the positioning of United Nations peacekeepers wherever needed. Nonetheless, they do not come without any issues at all.

But not just that, Third-World members are even given a better anchor to economic reforms with mandates and different types of assistance.

Nevertheless, the United Nations has been able to appease terror and threats among countries? To some degree, yes. But can we really be sure that plots to war are totally rejected, or is there an ongoing silent rift we need to detect before it worsens?

War-Ready

Though most countries are chastened against wars, it can never be an assurance. In fact, development of nuclear weapons continues to flourish. The reason? In preparation for potential conflict.

What is dreadful is that these countries actually invested resources, skills, and talents into the manufacturing of weapons that cause grim primary destruction and collateral damage across generations that is beyond tolerable.

What we can see here is that the United Nations has not totally extinguished hatred but just silenced it to evolve into a terrible hunger for the massive destabilization of opposing countries — if given a chance.

Humane-ity?

Consequently, as ironic as it could sound, the huge gap between the Super Powers and the Third-Worlds do not seem to be eradicated by United Nations efforts.

Also, the deployment of United Nations peacekeepers though may have been instrumental to a certain level of peace, also sparked doubts as to the authenticity of their intentions.

Reports from the previous years show that where peacekeepers are seen is also where the rate of child prostitution skyrockets. According to reports, in order to mask the supposed child abuse, the children were allegedly offered food or money to make it appear like prostitution. This is a situational exploitation of the hunger-stricken masses in the Third-Worlds.

Aside from that, there were also historical records of mass murders under the UN watch that happened all due to fascism or civil war. These occurred just because their peacekeepers are unprepared to protect the civilians.

Seven decades of working towards a vision, but if the cause of unity is being triumphant, what are these peacekeepers for?

Rift

We probably need to look at how the relationship among member countries are established before we consider the reconstruction of world peace.

Back in the 1940’s, the UN practiced veto power in voting. In addition to seniority of membership, the authority to the final word in decisions is vested upon the country that funds the United Nations more than others.

So, regardless if 80% of the funds came from some twenty plus other members, it is the major financier they listen to. This practice furthered in the next several years that eventually, the countries were categorized. This only shows that the United Nations itself tolerated classification according to economic relevance. One of the major UN financiers even proposed that the number of votes should be proportional to funds a country contributes.

UN Countries Today

Basing on facts, what we can conclude here is that the United Nations has not totally succeeded in its goal in uniting different countries.

There is a boost in crime rates especially during outbreaks of war. Unfortunately, refugees are being banned from entering a more dependent state.

If the UN principles were able to permeate the subconscious of world leaders, these people would be more open to offering security and protection regardless of who the displaced persons are.

This is an outright showcase of indifference to neighboring countries.

Furthermore, though currently, the United Nations has 130 member states, its policies still exclude nations that do not fall under their own category of sovereignty. An exhibition of UN’s exclusive culture.

Moreover, the United Nations has no total control as to what member countries are into. Super Powers like Russia and America have histories of doing what they want regardless of what the UN says. Some Asian countries proliferate mockery and injustice.

If world peace and unity are the two things the United Nations aims for, with rampant terrorism and self-inflicted pains, clearly, they have failed in their goals. For if every member of the UN understood what oneness is, they would open themselves to diversity and the strength that comes along with.
