A typical day in my life; I was busy on my phone, scrolling through Instagram and Facebook. That’s when I came across new memes about a child addicted to some “solution”. I passively ignored it, thinking it was just another meme. Little did I know the reality behind it. Spoiler: it’s related to drugs.

Amsterdam is the weed capital of Europe, maybe even the world. That’s what people all around the world say at least. Cannabis aficionados love Amsterdam for its vast buffet of drugs, prostitution and, well, fun. But guess what, cannabis and other substances aren’t really legal in Amsterdam. The capital of the Netherlands struggles, like every other nation, with the circulation of hard drugs. They have, however, found a unique way of dealing with it. Namely tolerating cannabis and helping drug addicts deal with their addiction.

We are at war, haven’t you noticed? We are all caught up in the middle of the War on Drugs, initiated by Richard Nixon in 1971, a war that is not unlike any other, with an insane amount of casualties worldwide, unrests and no real solution in sight.

In the name of equality and gender rights, we have dedicated the month of October to LGBTQ+, including the history, achievements, and issues surrounding it. The perception and inclusion of LGBTQ+ in our culture have increased and gotten better significantly over the course of the past decades. There’s undoubtedly still a long way to go, making it even more important to talk about it, to preach messages of love and inclusion instead of hate and isolation.

Oceania has an appalling LGBTQ rights record, and it is one that you never hear about. The region is often overlooked in regards to its human rights record, with the mainstream media preferring report on the natural beauty and splendor of the continent rather than it’s downfalls of inequality.
They say that a pot of gold awaits at the end of a rainbow, but for the LGBTQ+ community, there are no treasures. While the advent of the LGBTQ+ (or LGBTQQIAAP, which stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Allies, and Pansexual) community has brought about new meanings to rainbows and pride, the rest of the world, at its core, remains resistant to the possibilities of gender fluidity. And for these people, the struggle continues.
